JMC News: Madison Endowments Surpass $1 Million Mark

As Dean of James Madison College, I am proud to announce that James Madison College has passed an important development milestone. The college's endowment funds topped the $1 million mark. In the past six years, we have more than doubled our endowments, adding new support for scholarships, student programming, and faculty development. Some of these new funds include the following:

**Burton and Rosalie Gerber Scholarship (aimed at supporting an upper division student interested in pursuing a career in international affairs);
**Raymond D. and H. Claire Vlasin Faculty Development Fund (aimed at supporting faculty research);
**Nelson and Marlene Cummings Endowment (providing scholarship money for minority students); and
**Herbert Garfinkel Memorial Endowment for Citizenship and Democracy (to support public affairs programming in areas especially important to Dean Garfinkel).

For a complete list of endowments, visit JMC Endowment Values: http://www.jmc.msu.edu/development/05endow.pdf (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)

We have also succeeded in fully endowing two funds honoring recent retirees from the College, the Ron and Barbara Dorr Endowment (for student programming in the humanities) and the Michael and Audrey Rubner Scholarship (for students in international studies).

In all, these endowment funds generate more than $50,000 a year for James Madison College, and they will do so forever.

I want to particularly single out Rocky Beckett for the work he has done on this and every other aspect of development. Rocky is a quite simply as good as they get. As Rocky would himself be the first to say, he couldn't have accomplished what he has without the work of Carolyn Koenigsknecht and Stephanie Murdoch and the whole Madison team.

I also want to thank the donors, who have so generously responded to our requests and invested their money in the college and its future. It was one of my earliest goals to double our endowment, and then to double it again. Rocky and I already have our sights on the next million. We appreciate your financial support of and commitment to James Madison College.

Sincerely,

Sherman W. Garnett
Dean
