JMC News: Sad News
We sadly announce the death of Jack Paynter, age 66. He served on the Madison and MSU faculties from 1969 until 1982. He was retired from the University of Dallas, as provost and professor. He played a crucial role in the early history of the college, helping to complete its founding, helping to found JMCD (now PTCD), helping to found Ethnic and Intergroup Relations (now SR), and serving as Acting Dean in 1979-80, a period during which the college was under serious threat. Jack was a superb teacher, scholar, and colleague, who had a profound impact on the lives of generations of Madison students. His published work focused on John Adams and the American revolutionary and founding periods. Throughout his time at Madison, he taught memorable courses on classical liberalism, Adam Smith, Rousseau, Plato, and American constitutional law. In 1980-81, he was the first Madison faculty member to receive MSU's Distinguished Faculty Award. He was married to Madison alumnus Peggy Bailey (Ethnic, '71).
The college is planning an event to celebrate Jack's life and his contributions to Madison sometime during the 2005-2006 academic year. Please watch for details or let us know if you are interested in participating.
