Madison Seminar Reports Released on the Economic Development and Prosperity Center Website
Final reports from JMC's "Michigan Futures Applied Public Policy Undergraduate Research Seminar" have been released:  Reports. The seminar was entitled, "Michigan's Future: Innovation, Entrepreneurialism and High Tech Job Growth."  The Web page contains links to both the 3-page Executive Summary and the full 77-page Final Report.  The seminar was the focal point of the March 2006 JMC News.  The college invites you to learn more about the Michigan Center for Innovation and Economic Prosperity by visiting the MCIEP Home Page.

Madison Welcomes New Class.Total Enrollment Grows
JMC's total enrollment has reached 1,222 students this fall, including 342 freshmen.  The entering class has 46 students from outside Michigan and 7 international or exchange students (representing Brazil, Japan, Hong Kong, France, Azerbaijan and Turkey).  James Madison College continues to be a prime destination for students interested in academic excellence, public policy and a liberal arts education.  Madison received a total of 773 applications and still has a waiting list of 75 first year students along with 78 second-year and 48 third year students hoping to enter the college.  During this growth the college has also added faculty to maintain small class size and high standards.  Many alumni play a role in the admissions process by contacting admitted students to discuss their Madison experience, thank you!  We also appreciate everyone who spreads the news about a Madison education and encourages students to consider JMC and MSU for their college education.

The 2006-07 Academic Year Started Out With A Flurry of Activity
James Madison College expanded into the west wing of third north in Case Hall and underwent renovation to accommodate Madison's new faculty and staff.  To see some pictures go to: http://www.jmc.msu.edu/renovation/.  The wing includes The Jack Paynter Seminar Room that houses state-of-the art technology for telephone and video conferencing.  If you are back on campus, stop by Case Hall to see the new wing.

During the first week of classes, approximately 340 JMC freshmen participated in community service day.  They were split into 17 groups of 20 students and randomly assigned a community service placement with such organizations as the Capital Area Literacy Coalition, the City Rescue Mission, Clean Water Action, Habitat for Humanity, the MSU Museum, the Red Cross, and Volunteers of America.

Community service placement day is one part of JMC InC, Madison's intensive program to introduce freshmen to the college.  Parents were welcomed at a reception and students participated in a colloquium, a book discussion (Reading Lolita in Tehran this year), dinner and a MADhouse.  A typical MADhouse includes students and faculty performing public readings, poetry, songs, on the spot storytelling, comedy, skits, even the occasional costume or interpretive dance

Students in the News

Amber Finkbeiner (senior IR) and Katherine Hughes (junior IR) were named in Lansing State Journal and State News articles about the aftermath of the MSU/Notre Dame football game on Saturday, September 23.  They participated in the Community Relations Coalition, a nonprofit group aiming to improve relations between East Lansing residents and MSU students.  The day after the game, the Community Relations Coalition organized a cleanup for the neighborhoods north of campus.  For more information and photos of both Amber and Katherine, see:  here and here.

John Fournier (PTCD senior) is running for a seat on the East Lansing City council.  For the State News article: here (hidden link)  http://www.statenews.com/article.phtml?pk=37849

Rebecca Lewis (IR, senior) has been named to MSU's 2006 Homecoming court.  After personal interviews, the seven MSU seniors selected for this year's court were chosen based on their ability to represent MSU with their "Spartan spirit," academic standards and leadership skills.
